Background and aim: The use of a toothbrush with the bass technique has been recognized for its effectiveness in maintaining gingival health. Siwak has similar effectiveness to a toothbrush. The technique of using miswak varies, but there is no standardization regarding the safest technique for periodontal tissue. The purpose of this study was to identify and assess variations in siwak techniques against gingival tissue compared to toothbrushes.
Method: Narrative review by conducting a literature search on two electronic databases (Scopus and Pubmed) using Boolean that has been adjusted to MeSH.
Result: A total of 5 articles were included in this Narrative Review. Four out of five articles showed the results of a decrease in gingival score in miswak and toothbrushes. 1 article showed that miswak experienced a worsening of gingival compared to toothbrushes.
Conclusion: The variation of the siwak technique is able to minimize gingival trauma comparable to the bass technique of toothbrushing.
