Environmental Enteric Dysfunction (Environmental Enteric Dysfunction (EED)) is a chronic, subclinical intestinal disorder that significantly contributes to childhood stunting, malnutrition, and impaired cognitive development, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Despite its substantial public health burden, EED remains underdiagnosed due to the absence of non-invasive, scalable, and real-time monitoring systems. This study proposes a comprehensive digital health framework that integrates mobile health technologies, environmental monitoring systems, and advanced analytics to improve the detection and management of EED in children under five years of age.
A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative data from clinical biomarkers, environmental sensors, and anthropometric measurements with qualitative insights from healthcare workers and caregivers. The proposed digital platform incorporates Artificial Intelligence-based predictive models, Internet of Things (IoT) environmental sensors, and cloud-based data infrastructure to enable real-time surveillance and risk prediction. The system was evaluated based on predictive accuracy, usability, and feasibility in resource-constrained settings.
Findings indicate that integrated digital monitoring significantly improves early detection of EED risk compared to conventional surveillance methods. The use of multimodal data enhanced predictive performance, while real-time environmental tracking provided valuable insights into sanitation-related risk factors. Additionally, the platform demonstrated high usability and operational feasibility among community health workers in pilot settings.
The study concludes that digital health systems offer a promising and scalable solution for addressing the multifactorial nature of EED. By integrating clinical, environmental, and behavioral data into a unified ecosystem, the proposed framework supports early intervention and improved child health outcomes. These findings highlight the potential of digital transformation in strengthening global child health monitoring systems and reducing the burden of environmentally mediated diseases.
