Shingles, or Herpes Zoster, is a viral infection that occurs when the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) reactivates. It results in painful, blistering skin eruptions and inflammation of the nerves. While conventional antiviral treatments can be effective, they often face challenges such as poor skin penetration and systemic side effects. In contrast, herbal-based formulations offer a safe, affordable, and effective alternative due to their anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. This review outlines the disease Mechanism, current treatments, and modern formulation methods — including a new herbal cream developed for topical management of shingles that contains Durva, Turmeric, Neem, Aloe Vera, Coconut oil, Beeswax, and Vitamin E.
