Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by persistent hyperglycemia and has widespread effects on various body systems, including oral health. Elevated blood glucose levels can impair immune system function, reduce salivary flow, and disrupt tissue healing processes, thereby increasing susceptibility to various oral diseases. This article reviews the impact of diabetes mellitus on the development of oral disorders, with a particular focus on pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and preventive strategies. From a pathogenetic perspective, hyperglycemia promotes the formation of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs), which impair immune responses and induce chronic inflammation, facilitating the development of periodontitis, fungal infections, and damage to the supporting tissues of the teeth. Common clinical manifestations observed in patients with diabetes mellitus include xerostomia, burning mouth sensation, candidiasis, gingival bleeding, tooth mobility, and delayed wound healing following dental treatment. In addition, the bidirectional relationship between diabetes and periodontitis indicates that poor oral health can further exacerbate glycemic control. Preventive measures include optimal blood glucose control, routine dental and oral care, improved oral hygiene practices, and patient education regarding the risk of oral complications. A comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms and clinical manifestations enables healthcare professionals to develop effective intervention strategies to minimize oral complications in patients with diabetes mellitus.
