Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a long-term metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and dynamic beta-cell failure. The global rise in the incidence of T2DM has warranted a need for sustainable and wholesome treatments. Recently, lifestyle interventions physical activity, dietary modification, and behavioral therapy have been suggested as an encouraging way forward for early T2DM reversal. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the efficacy of lifestyle intervention in reversing early T2DM. The evidence suggests that intensive lifestyle intervention can significantly improve glycemic control and, in some cases, result in diabetic remission. Adherence, personalized intervention, and long-term follow-up are, however, still the determinants of outcome.
