Diabetes mellitus is closely linked with an extensive international health burden that warrants safer and more potent treatments. Recently, buccal drug delivery systems, namely peptide–hybrid herbal films, have emerged as appealing agents to deliver antidiabetic therapy. The buccal delivery systems are devised to take advantage of the rapid absorption potential buccal delivery provides, paired with the synergistic actions of plant peptides and herbal bioactive composites. Emerging reports suggest these novel formulations could effectively maintain blood glucose concentrations, stimulate insulin production, and provide antioxidant effects to manage limitations traditionally associated with diabetes therapies. Recent reports suggest that hybrid buccal films enhance drug bioavailability while improving patient adherence, and provide multimodal activity for managing diabetes. Even though early clinical results have shown encouraging results, more data is needed for larger-scale use, standardization, and regulatory use, especially on medium-to large-scale research. In conclusion, peptide-hybrid herbal buccal films present a novel, user-friendly method that may change the paradigm of diabetes therapy. However, further study and development are necessary before they can be applied in clinical settings.
