Furosemide is a strong loop diuretic commonly used to manage swelling linked to congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney disease. It also treats high blood pressure. Furosemide works mainly by blocking the Na⁺-K⁺-2Cl⁻ co-transporter in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle. This action leads to a notable increase in the excretion of sodium, chloride, and water. Furosemide has a quick onset and a short duration of action, which makes it effective for both acute and chronic conditions. However, long-term use can cause electrolyte imbalances, dehydration, and hearing damage, especially at high doses or when taken with other drugs that can harm hearing. The way furosemide works in the body can change based on how it is given, the person's kidney function, and individual patient factors. This overview summarizes furosemide’s medical effects, uses, and clinical factors, emphasizing its important role in diuretic treatment.
