Background: Anxiety is a natural response to surgery and anesthesia depending to various factors and manifesting different effects on patients. The aim of this study was to find out counselling effect on anxiety levels and hemodynamic parameters of patients. Also to find out whether counselled patients manage their anxiety symptoms better than the non-counselled patients.
Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out at Northwest General Hospital and Research Centre. Patients were divided into two groups, counselled and non-counselled group. Counselled patients counselling was done by researchers and non-counselled were managed by hospital ward staff. A pre-tested questionnaire including demographics, VAS score and hemodynamic parameters was completed for all the patients. Data was analyzed through R software version 4.6.1.
Results: No significant differences were obvious in counselled group after counselling. The VAS score and hemodynamic values either remain the same or increases slightly in both groups. However, there was a slight improvement in systolic blood pressure after counselling in counselled group.
Conclusion: Mostly female patients, significant low education levels and no previous surgical experience are the main factors in increase anxiety which remains almost unchanged after counselling.
